A BIZARRE DRAW

This short game is from recently concluded National Closed 2011. A bizarre draw because we need to repeat the position nine (or is it ten?) times. This is due to tournament regulation that disallow draw below 20 moves.

The game followed a well known Sax-Seirawan 1988 game but of course their game ended on move 12.

Below is the game.
W: ILHAM
B : ONG THIAN LOON

Well, not really a game that we proud of.

Half a point for a draw.

Zero point for lack of fighting spirit or perhaps I should use the word of the month...ducking.

  1. If you claim three fold repetition that is valid for draw. Three fold always priority over number of minimum moves

  2. ape aa.. confirm dah 3 fold, tak perlu tunggu 20 move rules.. like jimmy said. 20 move rules tu untuk draw base on agreement. in this case, its a 3 fold.

  3. I knew at least 9 drawish situation. threefold is only one of them.

  4. Guys,
Thanks for the comments. I know that 3 folds is a draw but afraid that Arbiter might think otherwise (followed the law to the letters, draw below 20 not allowed) and award both of us zero...scary, you'll never know!
So, better safe than sorry, we spent a few minutes making those perpetual moves up to moves blackjack (21)

  5. Ha ha ha... I did announce that players claiming for draws in less than 20 moves can call the arbiter for "approval". This was clearly a draw since black has no choice but to repeat the moves.... It will be unfair to deny a draw unless of course the arbiter does not know how to play chess.... :D
